It's quite frustrating. The stack doesn't make a lot of sense. The profile will be named profile_name in the profile manager. When I ran it without the command line parameter it changed a bunch of pre-configured settings (in about:config) in my default firefox profile which was very bad.
To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in safe mode (don't forget to select Disable all add-ons when you start safe mode). We left application.ini in place purely because it's useful from an automation standpoint (being able to grep information about the build from it). I have uninstalled and reinstalled ForceField, rebooted, cleared virtual data. This is typically a date identifier, and should be different for every released version of an application.
